Carrying hopes for a fresh start, 138 Somali refugees departed from Aden International Airport, heading back to Somalia under the Assisted Voluntary Return (#ASR) programme of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (#UNHCR). The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to support refugees who wish to return to their countries of origin.
This marks the fourth voluntary return flight facilitated by Nahda Makers Organization (#NMO) in 2026 which comes as part of the project "Protection and multi-sector assistance for refugees and asylum-seekers in South Yemen (Aden/Basateen and Hadramout/Al Mukalla)", as part of its continued humanitarian efforts to facilitate refugees’ return and ensure that all necessary departure procedures are completed in an organized and safe manner. At total of 607 refugees have returned to Somalia in 2026 under the programme.
To prepare the returnees for this step, with UNHCR's support, NMO’s team coordinated the return arrangements, including registration and document verification, pre-departure awareness sessions, transportation of passengers and their belongings to Aden International Airport, and facilitation of travel procedures in coordination with the relevant authorities.
As part of the broader #UNHCR programme, passengers also underwent the necessary medical examinations with other partners. UNHCR supports the voluntary return process through counselling and coordination with relevant partners, ensuring that refugees receive the necessary assistance for their return and reintegration.
As the flight took off via (Fly Aden) Airways, it carried 138 passengers towards a new chapter in their lives, opening up opportunities for them to return home and rebuild their lives in stability. For these returnees, voluntary return represents more than just a journey; it is a step towards restoring a sense of normalcy and building a new future.
