Building Sustainable Livelihoods and Resilient Communities: Empowering Gender Equality, Climate Adaptation, and Self-Sufficiency in Hadramout Governerate
The Food Assistance for Assets (FFA) project in the field of Resilience and Livelihoods is implemented by Nahda Makers Organization (NMO) in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP), with funding from the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), across Seiyun and Al-Qatn districts in Hadhramaut Governorate from September 2025 to April 2026. The project targets 300 vulnerable households, while generating indirect benefits for a broader group of farmers and agricultural communities.
The project aims to strengthen climate-resilient agricultural livelihoods through the rehabilitation of traditional irrigation canals, improvement of water distribution systems, and construction of flood protection and soil erosion control structures. Key interventions include the rehabilitation of main and secondary irrigation canals in Wadi Jabhoud (Al-Qatn), Wadi Bin Yamani, and Wadi Shuhouh (Seiyun), in addition to the construction of gabion structures, reinforcement of earthen embankments, and improvement of on-farm irrigation networks serving agricultural lands.
The project adopts the Food Assistance for Assets (FFA) approach, whereby beneficiaries participate in the creation and rehabilitation of community assets in exchange for food or cash assistance. This approach provides short-term income support while generating sustainable long-term development benefits. The project also promotes community ownership and sustainability by actively engaging local communities and strengthening beneficiaries' capacities in climate-smart agriculture and water resources management.
