As part of ongoing efforts to support durable solutions for refugees in Yemen, Nahda Makers Organization (#NMO) is supporting UNHCR to kick off the implementation of its 2026 “Assisted Spontaneous Return” (ASR) programme, by assisting an initial 155 refugee to return to Somalia. This activity is part of a broader multi-sectoral project supporting refugees and asylum seekers in Yemen, implemented with UNHCR.
The ASR programme aims to support Somali refugees who wish to voluntarily return to their country of origin in a safe and dignified manner.#1000;"> The programme involves a series of integrated procedures to facilitate voluntary return in line with humanitarian standards. UNHCR conducts voluntary return counselling, confirms the voluntary nature of returns, processes return requests, coordinates return arrangements with relevant stakeholders in Yemen and Somalia, and provides air travel and cash assistance to support return and reintegration. As part of this process, NMO supports registration and document verification, medical examinations, pre-departure awareness sessions, transportation of refugees and their luggage to the airport, and the facilitation of departure procedures in coordination with the relevant authorities.
For the first return flight of 2026, 155 refugees residing in Al-Basateen area of Aden Governorate expressed their interest to take part in the programme. Future trips in 2026 are expected to include refugees residing in other governorates.
This activity forms part of broader efforts to support durable solutions for refugees by ensuring that return journeys are carried out voluntarily, safely and in an orderly manner while preserving the dignity and well-being of the beneficiaries.
