NMO is a registered national NGO with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor No 284. Our mission is to take the lead to empower communities in Yemen through humanitarian response and sustainable development programs in a professional way through effective partnerships. NMO started its activity in Yemen since 2012 and has been implementing projects in 5 sectors, namely FSL, Education and Child Protection, WASH and Health, Shelter and CCCM, and Governance and skill-building.

NMO is looking for an efficient and qualified person to fill the post of Lawyer to carry out the following tasks:

Main Responsibilities of the Lawyer:

Individual Legal Support:

  • Receives referrals from CBPNs and focal points for people identified during field work and who are in need of legal assistance.
  • Conducts interviews with cases referred by CBPN to assess legal needs, either on the field.
  • Provide individual and/or family legal counseling to beneficiaries, in order to orient them and make them aware of the legal procedures available and most suitable for each case.
  • When necessary and desirable, provide legal guidance to PoC who need legal protection or other legal support. This service may include only legal advice, but in discussion with the beneficiary, can also include legal representation at court, or mediation between parties.
  • Assists and counsels the beneficiaries in accessing civil documentation for HHs members.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times and conduct all interviews and assessments in a way that is sensitive to the psychosocial needs of the case.
  • Ensure the case has full information regarding his/her legal rights and also the possible outcomes/consequences of the case after the presentation in court.
  • Advise safety procedures/ways to avoid further harm to the case.

Legal Awareness:

  • The lawyer will carry out awareness sessions on documentation and legal issues, which are identified through a community-based approach and are relevant for IDPs, Returnees, and vulnerable HC members.

Meetings:

  • The Lawyer may be required to attend regular meetings with all project staff.
  • Attend meetings and workshop/training as requested by the Legal Officer\Protection Manager.
  • Ad hoc meetings, which can be called to discuss highly urgent cases.
  • Meeting with the department of justice, police, or any relevant authority, regarding the case based on the need and the specific situation.

Reporting:

  • With the consent of the beneficiaries involved, the lawyer will provide a detailed record of the support provided to the beneficiaries, by recording information on individual case files.
  • On a weekly basis, the Lawyer will provide the Legal Officer\IM with an overview of the support provided.
  • The lawyer will provide monthly reports on the activities to Legal Officer\IM, including figures on legal assistance to individual cases, legal awareness sessions, and overall trends related to the legal-juridical sector.
  • And perform any other tasks requested from the lawyer.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in law, human rights, or any related field.
  • Relevant professional experience of two (2) years in the legal sector.
  • Previous experience providing legal services in the humanitarian sector.
  • Written and spoken Arabic, English is a strong advantage.
  • Effective oral communication skills.
